New read aloud feature available on Key Stage 1 homework tasks
The MyMaths team are excited to release a new feature that allows questions to be read out aloud in all Key Stage 1 homework tasks.
Over the past year, we have been exploring ways to improve the accessibility of our content. We are excited to launch one of the ideas we were investigating: text-to-speech functionality in our homework tasks, so that pupils can have questions read out aloud to them.
So far, we have made the feature available in all Year 1 and Year 2 homework tasks.
To enable it, pupils can press the menu button in the top right corner of their task. Then press the “Read aloud buttons” option in the side menu.
The read aloud feature can be enabled on a task by opening the side menu.
Pupils can then toggle the feature on or off and choose a character voice. The voices can be previewed by pressing the play buttons in the side menu.
The read aloud buttons can be toggled on or off. There are three character voices to choose from.
Pressing the “More settings” button allows pupils to adjust the speed of the voice, so they can have text read out at slower or quicker speeds.
The voice rate can be adjusted so that text is spoken at slower or quicker speeds.
Once pupils are happy with their voice settings, they can close the menu using the X button in the top right. Their settings are saved in the browser files, so they won’t have to enable the buttons every time they open a new task. The task will now show the read aloud buttons, which can be pressed to read out the questions.
Pupils can press on the play buttons to have questions read out aloud to them.
We hope children find these read aloud buttons intuitive to use, and that this feature benefits those who have difficulties with reading or a preference for speech.
We’d love to hear what you and your pupils think of the new read aloud feature and how we can improve it – if you have any feedback for us, please let us know at mail@mymaths.co.uk.
